Our paper “Evaluating ChatGPT-based Data Augmentation for Medical Concept Normalization” by Dr. Haihua Chen, Ruochi Li, Dr. Ana Celevland, and Dr. Junhua Ding won a third award at the SCC/MLA 2024 Annual Conference.

This paper employed ChatGPT-based zero-shot and few-shot prompting for data augmentation in the medical concept normalization (MCN) task. Experiments show that few-shot learning, with prompts incorporating appropriate context and a small, representative set of original data, is an effective approach. The methods include a data quality evaluation framework, LLM-based data augmentation strategies, and procedures for data quality enhancement, providing valuable insights for data augmentation and evaluation in similar deep learning applications.
Ph.D. student Yuhan Zhou, presented this paper on behalf of our team, and connected to excellent researchers and practitioners in the Health Informatics field. We would like to thank Dr. Ana Cleveland and the conference committee for this precious opportunity!
